Chicago Work Injury Attorneys
Chicago is the City That Works. People take pride in their jobs and work long hours to support their families. But your workplace may also be the site of a devastating injury that could change your life forever – physically, emotionally, and financially.
An injury or fatality at work impacts an entire family. Lost income, increasing medical bills, chronic pain, and a lifelong disability can produce unbearable stress.
Hammond Law LLC can help you deal with the aftermath of a work-related injury, getting you and your family the compensation necessary to get back on track.
Workers’ Compensation Doesn’t Compensate You For All Of Your Losses
Many workers believe that workers’ compensation benefits are the sole source of money for paying medical bills and replacing lost earnings. The problem for many people who suffer on-the-job injuries is that these benefits may not cover all of their medical expenses, nor be sufficient to support them and their families while they are unable to work. Additionally, workers’ compensation benefits do not include other damages available in civil personal injury lawsuits, such as compensation for pain and suffering.
In some cases, however, injured workers may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit seeking compensation from parties other than their employer.
Workers’ Compensation Doesn’t Shield Third Parties From Personal Injury Claims
When the blame for a workplace accident is on a third party’s shoulders, Illinois law does not shield such parties from personal injury lawsuits as it does employers. For example, an injured worker may be able to pursue claims for damages against other individuals and companies when:
- They suffer injuries in a car or truck accident caused by another driver during the course of their employment.
- They suffer an injury on negligently maintained property owned by a third party while on the job, such as when making a delivery or service call.
- A defective or unreasonably dangerous tool, piece of equipment, or machine or in the workplace caused the injury. In such cases, the company that manufactured or maintained the equipment may be held accountable.
- A toxic substance manufactured by a third party was the source of the injury.
For these reasons, do not assume that workers’ compensation is the only possible source of recovery for your injury.
